The native of Guadalajara, Mexico, worked for a concrete company and was supporting a 7-year-old son who lives in Mexico. "He wasn't famous. He wasn't an artist. He wasn't a singer," Munoz's older brother, Efrain, said through a translator. "But he was a very loved person." Munoz died at University of Louisville Hospital on Saturday night after police said he was shot inside the lobby of the Olive Garden restaurant on Outer Loop following a "verbal altercation." Jessica Kennon, a Louisville resident and advocate for the Hispanic community, translated for Munoz's brothers on Friday. Five brothers live in Indiana and seven other siblings live in Mexico, Kennon said. Munoz's family and friends in Southern Indiana and Mexico are "devastated" following his death, but they are determined to keep his memory alive, Kennon said. They believe Munoz's killing was a hate crime. "Until we are told otherwise, we truly believe this was based on the fact that he was from Mexico," sister-in-law Donna Munoz said.
